Last February, the NFL Super Bowl halftime show recorded 115.3 million viewers when Bruno Mars and Red Hot Chili Peppers took the stage. And as the NFL season kick starts, more fans are curious to see who will be performing at the Super Bowl XLIX.
According to Cleveland.com, next year's Super Bowl performers, which will be held outside of Phoenix on February 1, 2015, have now been narrowed down to three candidates: Coldplay, Rihanna, and Katy Perry.
There is an alleged twist with the Super bowl half time. According to a new report by The Wall Street Journal, the three artists under consideration will be asked to contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the NFL, in exchange for the halftime gig. In the past, the performers play for free and their travel and production expenses were covered by the NFL.
It is still unclear how much money the NFL was seeking, but the pay-to-play suggestion got a chilly reception from the candidates' representatives.
According to Joanna Hunter, a spokeswoman for the NFL, "the league's goal is to put on the best show possible."
Some artists have used their performances in one of Sports' biggest nights as an opportunity to announce upcoming tour dates and boost ticket sales. Performers have also seen increases in their CD and download sales after the Super Bowl performance. According to Trade publication, Pollstar, the world tour of Beyonce entitled "Mrs. Carter Show" grossed more than any other tour after her halftime performance in 2013.
Bruno Mars also used the stage to promote his 2014 world tour and recent album, "Unorthodox Jukebox." Mars and Red Hot Chili Peppers, who played for roughly 12 minutes, got a publicity for the band of nearly $100 million because commercials cost $4 million for a 30-second spot.
What do you think? Would Rihanna, Coldplay, or Katy Perry pay to perform in the Super Bowl halftime show? Out of those three acts, who would you want to see?
