A number of MLB matches were played on August 17, with exciting victories by teams like the Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs.
In a report by Sports Chat Place, the Brewers had a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend. Yovani Gallardo pitched well, beating Clayton Kershaw. Ryan Braun contributed to the score by hitting a two-run homer. Carlos Gomez also hit his 19th career homerun. The finishing touches were added by Jonathan Lucroy in the three-game sweep. Wily Peralta also tied Adam Wainwright and Johnny Cueto in terms of major league victories with 15-7.
According to CBS Sports, Lucroy had five RBIs, which is his highest in the season. On Sunday, the final score was 7-2, giving the Brewers a three-game lead against the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central. Lucroy said, "It was one of those days where I got a couple of good pitches to hit and was able to hit them hard." He added, "(Dan) Harren made a couple of mistakes up in the zone and I was able to take advantage."
ESPN.com writes that the San Francisco Giants rally past the Philadelphia Phillies with a 6-5 victory on August 16, 2014. Second base Joe Panik showed that he was an asset to the team by tripling and scoring on the tiebreaking single of Gregor Blanco during the eighth inning.
He said, "I feel like I've hit my stride here. When you first come up, everything is new to you. Once I got settled in, I got a feel for everything." Blanco was 2 for 2 with a couple of RBIs. Michael Morse had a couple of doubles as well as a triple. Ryan Howard managed three hits and three RBIs. Tim Hudson struggled giving the advantage to the Giants to have five scoreless innings through their five relievers.
In a article by The New York Times, the Chicago Cubs also faced the New York Mets on August 17, with the Cubs garnering the victory with a final score of 2-1. The Mets showed some hope via rookie Rafael Montero. Dan Warthen, pitching coach of the Mets, apparently inspired Montero to be aggressive. The rookie had his best outing in the major league so far, striking out six, walking two and giving up five hits. The crowd applauded Montero as he exited the field. The Mets batted only .210 although Montero's showing was a good surprise for everyone.
