It appears that the makers of "The LEGO Movie" are so pleased with the performance of the film, which was released in February this year, that it has decided to release not just one but TWO more sequels of the hit flick on top of its follow up. That makes a total of three sequels.
Warner Brothers announced Wednesday that it had "slated two untitled films to come out over Memorial Day weekend in 2018 and 2019," according to Time.
"The studio has already dated Lego 2 for May 26, 2017. It could be planning for a threequel for 2019, while a sequel to the Lego Ninjago spinoff could claim the 2018 date," The Hollywood Reporter added. The last two films have been slated to be released on May 25, 2018 and May 24, 2019, although "things could always change, considering the dates are so far out."
According to IGN, the first Ninjago flick has been given a September 23, 2016, showdate. Then again, this could change depending on the studio's future strategies.
Warner has not yet revealed the voice cast of the threequels. The original film featured the voices of Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman, THR noted.
Back in June, Yahoo! Movies reported that LEGO 2 would be helmed by a new director, Chris McKay. Fans of the movie should not be worried about this new choice as he was the animation co-director on the original film, so he's "been around the blocks" where "The LEGO Movie" is concerned.
Also, it was revealed that Spider-Man might be appearing in the second installment, although writer-directors, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, "would love" to have Marvel heroes involved in the movie. However, Miller had recognized that this possibility is difficult to realize as Marvel reportedly does not need LEGO "to make their movies successful." But this has not kept the duo from hoping.
"Hopefully it will be like another Roger Rabbit-situation where, 'Of course, we'd love to be a part of this. But who knows?" Miller mused.
We're not sure how LEGO 2 would pan out at this point, as the scriptwriting duties have been handed over to Jared Stern and Michelle Morgan, ScreenRant said. "Stern previously worked on the screenplays for some of Disney's recent computer-animated features (Bolt, Wreck-It Ralph) as well as the Mouse House's 2D animated 'Princess and the Frog,' while Morgan is new to the world of writing for animated film," the site said. It's still not clear whether Miller and Lord will be involved in the sequel.
