With the FIBA World Cup set to tip off at the end of August in Spain, 24 of the world's most impressive teams are gearing up in what could be the most exciting season ever in the league's history.
How Team USA fares, for one, is one thing fans around the globe are watching out for. After all, some of the most powerful basketball players this planet has seen are from the USA. But, Team USA has a big problem. It has too many All-Star-grade point guards to choose from.
According to Bleacher Report, there are six superstar NBA point guards trying to make the 12-man team for Spain: John Wall, Steph Curry, Derrick Rose, Kyrie Irving and Damian Lillard; but not all will make the cut. Given the stellar track record of these huge talents, naming who will join the final roster could be the "toughest call" the coaching staff will have to make, as USA Basketball coach, Mike Krzyzewski, has told several media. The guys are in Las Vegas now for the tryouts.
"What we have to determine at some point is how many point guards you can carry," said Jerry Colangelo, managing director of the Men's National Team, in an article by USA Basketball. Colangelo adds that among the positions on the team, the guard is its greatest strength.
Each of the contenders to the team have something to boast about and every reason to be called into it. Wall, Curry and Lillard were All-Stars in 2013, Irving was named All-Star MVP and, Rose, while healing through an injury, would have been at the top as well. In fact, the same Bleacher Report article quotes ESPN Chicago's Nick Friedell as saying that among those who are trying out, Rose is the most impressive (and that's despite his condition).
"Stephen Curry is already a lock to make the squad, based on his international experience and the fact that he shoots the ball better than anyone else from the outside," predicts Adam Fromal, a journalist for BR. "That leaves Lillard competing with Wall, Irving and Rose for an as-of-yet undetermined number of spots."
Who and how many players Team USA will carry to Spain are still unknown, although what we do know now is that the primary team will consist of only 12 players.
"Coach K never really gives those (roster) hints away, beause I'm not sure even he knows," said Curry when asked if the coach has given out any sign at all of who is making the cut.
"There's only one basketball," added Curry. "We have to be versatile and have to be able to adapt."
GiveMeSport writes that Curry, Rose and Irving are a shoo-in for the final team, but notes that there could be a chance to bring in a fourth guard because the team will be exposed to a lot of small line-ups. This means Lillard and Wall will have to deliver impressive performance at tryouts.
