As Season 5 of the HBO hit series "Game of Thrones" nears, fans of the George RR Martin books are worried that producers of the show would be ignoring a character that is considered to be key to the Westeros literature.
At the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, there was excitement over the announcement of actors who would be playing the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce from "Evita") and the Three Sand Snakes (Jessica Henwick as Nymeria, Rosabell Laurenti Sellers as Tyne and "Whale Rider" Keisha Castle-Hughes as Obara), Wetpaint reported. But where is the female heir to the slained Oberyn Martell?
It could be recalled that in the last season, the beloved Prince of Dorne (played wonderfully by Pedro Pascual) fell in a bloody, spectacular fashion literally at the hands of the Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) during that iconic mortal combat. Although the Red Viper gained the upper hand and managed to fatally wound the large soldier who was fighting for Queen Cersei (Lena Headey), Martell was swiftly killed by the Mountain seconds before the latter died.
Fans of the books are worried over the cast announcement at Comic-Con because it seems Arianne will not be part of the new season. The outcry from fans is understandable, give that: One, Arianne Martell, who is the niece of the Red Viper and the daughter of Doran Martell, is the heiress of Dorne, the Huffington Post pointed out. Second, the rest of the news sites have stressed that Arianne is not just the heir of Dorne, but the main character of the entire Dorne plot in the books. This is because Arianne is a representation of everything opposite in the misogynist world in Westeros: women are not allowed to rule in the kingdom that houses the Iron Throne. Mashable also revealed that it was Arianne who was trying to convince Cersei's daughter, Marcella (now played by actress Nell Tiger Free) to seize the Iron Throne.
On the other hand, TIME magazine suggested that the announcement at Comic-Con might have been incomplete, and that HBO has plans to reveal Arianne sometime during the season period. This should get fans' hopes up, considering that HBO has tried to not veer away from the books ever since Season 1, and has worked with Martin to ensure that there are no wild departures from the epic fantasy series literature. Nonetheless, fans of the books are crossing their fingers, hoping that this should be the case, as a press release revealed that Trystane Martell, Arianne's younger brother, has been described as the heir of Dorne. Yikes.
