A rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana will commence on September 13. The two previously fought in May 2014 where Mayweather successfully defended his WBC and WBA welterweight titles.
Fans were clamoring for a second fight despite the majority decision win of Mayweather, who has an undefeated record of 46-0 with 26 knockouts. According to the fans, Maidana was one of the most challenging opponents that the champion had to face in the past decade.
Mayweather admitted that he found Maidana a worthy opponent, "Marcos Maidana is a tough customer and he gave me a fight that had me work for the victory. His style is difficult at best, but with experience comes a way and will to win. I'm not one to give second chances in the ring, but I want to give the fans what they want to see. I will be as prepared as I always am when I step in the ring on September 13. I only see the outcome one way and that's another successful night for me and my team," Mayweather said in a statement.
According to USA Today, Mayweather announced the fight on Twitter. He posted, "Mayweather vs. Maidana 2 on September 13, Live on Showtime PPV. #Mayhem". The rematch will happen at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. All nine Mayweather fights have been hosted at the same venue.
In a Yahoo! Sports report, it was noted that Golden Boy Promotions will be promoting the Mayweather fight for the 10th straight time. Stephen Espinoza, vice president and general manager of Showtime Sports, said that a rematch between Mayweather and Maidana would garner a large number of pay-per-view buys.
Espinoza said, "This was an interesting pattern for us to see. I think some people assumed Floyd would win in dominant fashion, as he has so often in recent times, but then they heard and read about the fight and I think they decide, 'You know what? That sounds entertaining enough,' and they bought it on Sunday or Monday. That, I think bodes well for the rematch."
Before Mayweather vs. Maidana Part Two was announced, Mayweather only had to pick among Maidana, Shawn Porter and Keith Thurman. Danny Garcia chose to stay at 140 pounds and intends to fight others first before moving up to Mayweather. Mayweather has made it clear that he will not be fighting anyone with Top Rank, namely Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto.
Maidana said about the rematch, "The rematch with Mayweather is the only fight that really motivates me." He concluded, "On September 13 he will not get away undefeated."
