George RR Martin is keen to do a Tolkien. During an appearance at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland, the author told Screen Daily that he is open to the idea of turning the last installment of the "Game of Thrones" TV series into a "huge epic movie."
"I would love that. If we go seven or eight seasons and then the show is still big enough that we can get the $200 million to finance a huge epic movie to end it...sure!," Martin said.
However, Martin cautioned that the process may take a while before the gargantuan project gets the green light. It may not even happen after all.
He said, "But that doesn't mean it has been approved. Some people like the idea. Other people don't like the idea. But that's still nothing to what Peter Jackson spends on a Lord Of The Rings movie or what any of these big, epic science fiction or fantasy movies have to spend. To go out with something big like that would be amazing," Martin said.
Martin shared that the production behind the "Game of Thrones" television series has already been a headache, considering that it hires a top-tier cast, thousands of extras and production crew. Screen Daily noted that each episode costs between $5 million and $6 million - and each season between $60 million and $70 million.
Meanwhile, other entertainment sites like MTV.com, believes that a grand movie/series finale will be a win-win situation for Martin. "Ending 'Thrones' as a feature film buys Martin a little more time to wrap up the books before the live-action adaptation beats him to the punch. As it stands, 'Thrones' could very easily catch or outpace Martin as soon as next season. If the author isn't able to release the sixth book in the series, 'The Winds of Winter,' in the next year or two, then 'Thrones' will most assuredly be ahead of Martin's schedule. Any plan to end 'Thrones' after 'seven of eight seasons,' followed up with one massive movie finale, lengthens the time in which Martin can write, write, write like the wind. That's a happy outcome for just about everybody involved," MTV wrote.
Martin is currently writing the sixth installment of the "Game of Thrones" series titled "The Winds of Winter." The International Business Times said filming of Season 5 of the HBO fantasy series will end in July, and announcement of the air date of the latest season will be done later this year.
