James Rodriguez was the biggest star of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and it was only expected that a lot of teams would start making giant offers for the 22-year-old striker.
In a report by The Independent, Rodriguez's current team, Monaco, wants €80million for their young star. Monaco also shared their interest in the possibility of acquiring Real Madrid players like Alvaro Morata and Fabio Coentrao.
A couple of things might lower the asking price of Monaco. First, Rodriguez indicated that he wanted to play for Real Madrid, describing that it would be a dream to don the white uniform. If Rodriguez is too keen to move, Monaco might settle for €70 million at the very least. Florentino Perez, president of Real Madrid, also said that he wants Rodriguez to be in his team soon. Second, the interest of Monaco in Morata and Coentrao can be used in a trade plus cash deal.
Monaco previously acquired Rodriguez from Porto for €45 million and the Colombian still has four more years in his contract.
According to the International Business Times, Colombia, where Rodriguez was playing for in the 2014 World Cup, was eliminated by host country Brazil in the quarterfinals, but the demand for Rodriguez continued to rise after he showcased his talents and maturity in the game. Rodriguez scored six goals in five games. Since 2002, he is the first player to score in every game during the first four matches of the World Cup.
IBT adds that Real Madrid "are ready to open talks with the Ligue 1 side in order to secure Rodriguez as a replacement for Angel Di Maria." Di Maria may not have taken this move lightly as IBT reports that the player may transfer to another team. Monaco is also said to be interested in Real Madrid players Diego Lopez and Casemiro.
In a report from Mundo De Portivo, Vadim Vasiley, vice-president of Monaco, said that they were not in a hurry or too optimistic about letting go of Rodriguez, especially after his excellent showing in Brazil. He said, "We really want to continue to have Rodriguez and I can say that we do not negotiate with any club."
Should a deal push through with Real Madrid, Monaco might not agree to a deal where they would get less than €45 million, considering that they paid the same sum in acquiring the young star in the past summer. Overall, it is up to Rodriguez to decide if he should continue playing for Monaco or join the current European champions.
