After a decade, "The Notebook" remains one of the most romantic and passion-driven movies in recent memory. It has earned more than $100 million at the box office, amassing a wealth of fans of the said drama flick and endless quotations of the movie adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' bestselling novel of the same name.
Unsurprisingly, the stars in the film adaptation, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, eventually became a couple after the project wrapped up. Is this a testament to the powerful romantic theme of the movie?
However, their four year on-and-off love affair was not to last, and both have moved on to different partners - something that fans had to learn to live with. He's now with actress Eva Mendes and she's currently with music manager Patrick Sambrook.
Just when we thought there's nothing more to milk from the erstwhile Ryan-Rachel pairing, "The Notebook" director Nick Cassavetes went on to reveal a juicy tidbit about the stars of his hit movie: they actually hated each other during filming.
"Maybe I'm not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set. Really not," the director told VH-1 in an interview. "Ryan came to me, and there's 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, 'Nick come here.' And he's doing a scene with Rachel and he says, 'Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?' I said, 'What?' He says, 'I can't. I can't do it with her. I'm just not getting anything from this,'" he recalled.
The Daily Mail noted that the romantic flick "is often cited as one of the films with the most intense chemistry between two actors." We suspect many would agree to this.
So, what did the director do to defuse the situation? He decided to have an "impromptu therapy session," which effectively helped save the project and bring it to completion.
"We went into a room with a producer; they started screaming and yelling at each other," he continued. "I walked out. At that point I was smoking cigarettes. I smoked a cigarette and everybody came out like, 'All right let's do this.' And it got better after that, you know? They had it out... I think Ryan respected her for standing up for her character and Rachel was happy to get that out in the open. The rest of the film wasn't smooth sailing, but it was smoother sailing."
Their fire apparently helped inject life and reality to the film, though. Will we see another Ryan-Rachel cinematic pairing? Should they team up again?
