General manager Josh Byrnes was fired by the San Diego Padres on June 22.
According to Yahoo! Sports, the struggling Padres announced that they dismissed Byrnes just before their game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mike Dee, president and CEO of the team stated that they are currently on the lookout for a new general manager. In the meantime, Omar Minaya, senior vice president for baseball operations and AJ Hinch and Fred Uhlman, Jr. assistant general managers of the Padres will take charge in Byrne's stead.
In the end of 2010, the Padres hired Byrnes as senior vice president for baseball operations from the Arizona Diamondbacks. 10 months after, he was promoted to general manager and signed a contract lasting five years. Despite his huge salary and promotion, the Padres did not improve much. Byrnes was also fired by the Diamondbacks in 2010.
Upon the start of the 2014 MLB season, the Padres are 23rd overall. During Byrnes' first two seasons, the Padres had 76-86 records. Byrnes was known to be effective when it comes to scouting and developing players. However, the Padres were ridden with injuries. At the time of the announcement, the Padres had a 32-43 record.
Dee said, "This ownership group is committed to fielding a team that consistently competes for postseason play. Thus far this season, the results on the field have been mixed at best and clearly have not lived up to expectations. After a lengthy evaluation of every facet of our baseball operations, we have decided to make this change today."
CBS Sports writes that Dee said, "The search for a new general manager begins immediately. We are looking for someone who can define, direct and lead this franchise's baseball philosophy for years to come."
In an ESPN article, Byrnes' biggest moves during his time with the San Diego Padres involved trades. He acquired Andrew Cashner from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Anthony Rizzo. He also acquired Yonder Alonso, Brad Boxberger, Yasmani Grandal and Edinson Volquez from the Reds for Mat Latos. Byrnes acquired Tyson Ross, Huston Street, Joaquin Benoit, Ian Kennedy and Carlos Quentin too.
In the meantime, team manager Bud Black and the rest of the coaching staff will remain with the team, although MLB experts speculate that Black's time is also limited, depending on how the Padres perform in their next few games. There are also talks that the Padres is looking to bring back Kevin Towers, general manager of the Diamondbacks.
