The Miami Marlins signed Andrew Heany and Anthony DeSclafani from Triple-A New Orleans on June 16.
Both pitchers will be included in the rotation for the week. The Marlins had to adjust the roster which involved placing eight players. Christian Yelich, left field, was put on the 15-day disabled group.
Heaney is the player to look out for in the adjusted lineup. The left-hander was the ninth overall pick in the 2012 MLB draft. He has a ERAs of 2.35 in Double-A and 2.7 in Triple-A. The addition of Heaney will hopefully improve the team's status after Jose Fernandez underwent elbow surgery and has to miss the entire season.
Heaney is set to debut in MLB on June 19, 2014 while DeSclafani will be seen on June 17, 2014 against the Chicago Cubs, replacing Turner. In effect, Kevin Slowey and Randy Wolf were placed for assignment. Turner will take on the role of Slowey. Slowey had 17 appearances and was 1-1 with an ERA of 5.30.
DeSclafani is 24 years old and debuted earlier in the 2014 MLB season. He was 1-1 with an ERA of 5.56 in the two times he started.
According to Heaney, in a report by ESPN, "It's surreal. You think of how it might happen, and then it does, and it doesn't hit you until now when I'm in the park and looking out."
Additionally, Tyler Kolek also signed with the Miami Marlins. The Marlins picked him second overall in the 2014 MLB draft. Kolek is right handed and 18 years old and will debut against the Chicago Cubs on June 16, 2014. Kolek's fastball averaged close to 100 mph and at times went over. In a report by the Miami Herald, Kolek is said to have agreed to a contract with a bonus of $6 million.
Yelich was substituted by Jake Marisnick from New Orleans. According to Mike Redmon, manager of the Marlins, Marisnick's natural position is center. He said, "I feel confident he can play anywhere. But I felt it was easier for Jake as a young guy to come up and play your natural position. He covers a ton of ground."
The changes resulted to the Miami Marlins having 10 players on their 25-man roster. Redmond said, "We're trying to win. We felt like bringing the young pitchers in... this was the time. Hopefully, they will help us win games."
