"Life of Pi" star Suraj Sharma is set to join the cast of the renowned TV series "Homeland" in the fourth season, according to Entertainment Weekly.
For the CIA thriller, Sharma strips himself of the innocent adventurer and survivor persona he donned for the Oscar awarded and Ang Lee-directed film to become Aayan Ibrahim, a Pakistani medical student who crosses paths many times with lead character Carrie Mathison, played by Claire Danes. His role is said to be "heavily recurring."
Sharma's casting gives fans a pretty good idea of the general vibe of the next season. Showtime has already announced two other members of the cast, including Laila Robbins to play the U.S. ambassador to Pakistan and Corey Stoll as the CIA chief of station in Pakistan.
In a report by Daily Mail, the Delhi-born and New York University-educated actor is just coming out of a lead role in the Disney film "Million Dollar Arm," which is based on a true story about two Indian teens recruited by a sports agent (played by "Mad Men'"s Jon Hamm) to play baseball in America. He is also currently taking a Mass Communications course at NYU.
The actor brings considerable acting chops to the series, having beaten around 3,000 other actors to the key role in "Life of Pi" at the age of 17 years. He has been nominated in several major acting award giving bodies, including the Critic's Choice Awards and the Phoenix Film Critics Society, among others. He has also won the Youth in Film award at the Last Vegas Film Critics Society in 2012, Best Performance by a Younger Actor at the 2013 Saturn Awards, and Best Scared as Sh*t Performance in the 2013 MTV Movie Awards. The "Life Pi" won the Best Picture award in the 85th Academy Awards.
"Homeland" production begins this month in South Africa and is set to return to television this fall. It will be set in Kabul and Islamabad.
