The powerful Williams sisters have been eliminated from the French Open.
In a report by USA Today, Serena and Venus Williams were expected to battle each other in the third round of the tournament for the 25th time. However, the weather was not on their side.
No. 29 Venus Williams lost to Anna Schmiedlova with a final score of 2-6, 6-3 and 6-4.
No. 1 Serena Williams lost two hours later against Garbine Muguruza with a final score of 6-2 and 6-2.
Venus and Schmiedlova played on Court Philippe Chatrier, while Serena and Muguruza played on Court Suzanne Lenglen in Paris, France.
Serena, the defending champion of the French Open, at one point during the match exclaimed, "I can't serve!"
She then said, after the match, "Nothing really worked. I don't know anything that actually worked." It was one of her most devastating losses in her Grand Slam career. She added, "She [Garbine] played really smart. I didn't adapt." The Spanish Muguruza ranked No. 35.
The older Venus said after her loss, "I felt like this was a match that I was most likely going to win. I don't know how Serena felt, but I'm sure she feels like that every time she goes on the court. So I think our expectation was to play in the next round."
Muguruza said, "I was like, 'Oh, my God, I'm winning." She shared her dream of playing against Serena, "Since I was a child, I thought, 'Oh, I want to play against Serena on center court.' And today was the day. And I think I did very good."
The Serena-Muruguza lasted only for 64 minutes. Among the factors that led to Serena's loss was powerful serves by Muguruza that exceeded 100mph. The American also had eight winners only and 29 unforced errors.
Sports Illustrated reports that the Williams sisters also lost together at the same venue in the third round in 2008. Muguruza is set to face Schmiedlova next.
