According to the California State Athletic Commission, Juan Manuel Marquez made $1.4 million while Mike Alvarado made $650,000 after their fight on May 17. The winner, Marquez, also gets the chance to face Manny Pacquiao, current WBO welterweight titleholder if they choose.
After Marquez's knockout win against Pacquiao in 2012, he should have been able to command a bigger purse, considering how others like Floyd Mayweather is reaping an average of $40 million per fight. In Marquez's fight against Bradley, he was guaranteed $6 million regardless of the outcome of the fight, writes Bleacher Report. In Pacquiao versus Marquez 4, the Mexican was able to bring home a guaranteed $3 million while the Filipino made a purse worth $8.5 million, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission. When Marquez faced Mayweather, the Mexican earned a guaranteed $3.2 million while Floyd Mayweather Jr. earned $10 million.
When it comes to fighting Pacquiao or Mayweather, the purse is generally bigger because of the popularity of both fighters. However, Pacquiao's pay-per-view buys have dipped since his two losses against Bradley and Marquez. Perhaps a fifth bout between Marquez and Pacquiao could help both their causes. Should Marquez face Pacquiao again, many fans and experts believe that it would only be for the money, since he basically ended all controversies by sending the Filipino to the pavement in their last bout. Previous fights against the two garnered decent pay-per-views, although nowhere near the region of Mayweather, who is reaping 500,000 to 2 million buys, making him the highest paid athlete in 2013.
In a report by Bad Left Hook, the 40-year-old Marquez may primarily have fought Mike Alvarado to redeem his previous losses against Timothy Bradley. Alvarado was also willing to settle for less than one million as long as he improves his standing after suffering a loss from Ruslan Provodnikov.
It is doubtful that Marquez would be pitted against Mayweather again. His best chances of increasing his purse would be to accept the challenge and face Pacquiao for a fifth time. Such a match would give him the privilege of increasing his cut from 25% during their last fight.
