With barely over a month before the 2014 FIFA World Cup begins, and with the date being so close, the U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, joked on the afternoon of Wednesday during a conference of the Americas in Washington, when he took the opportunity of asking Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi to join the American team for the Brazil 2014 world tournament.
Many people say that nothing united people like soccer, and it seems like Secretary John Kerry took this proverb seriousl and took the opportunity to propose a new kind of alliance between the peoples of the Americas.
"In this new age of alliances, we believe that alliance means that we have to share resources and assets, like soccer," jokingly said the Secretary of State, according to the website specialized in sports Soccerly.com.
"So we're here to humbly ask for the services of Lionel Messi in the month of June. We believe it would be good for our people there," joked Kerry while the public present at a conference on the White House laughed, a conference which discussed United States foreign policy, reported the BBC.
Closer every time, the 2014 Brazil FIFA World Cup promises to be one of the most exciting sports events of the year, if not the most exciting, and for which millions of people around the world who are unable to go to Brazil are preparing to watch the matches through TV or Internet subscriptions.
The United States' national team, as usual, will face teams with proven experience in World Cups like Germany, Portugal and Ghana, among others, so the Argentinian star's help wouldn't hurt.
