The Boston Bruins won over the Detroit Red Wings at the latter's home court, Joe Louis Arena, on April 22, 2014. The Bruins had a powerful showing from the first period and ended the game 3-0. The Game 3 winners currently lead the Stanley Cup opening round series 2-1. The next game will be in Boston, which the Red Wings have to win to avoid elimination, in a report by the Boston Herald.
During the first period, Dougie Hamilton and Jordan Caron of the Bruins scored the first two points. Patrice Bergeron shot the last point with an empty-net goal. Hamilton made a wrist shot in a power play, while Caron made the second shot after a rebound, taking advantage of a line change by the opponents.
As for the Red Wings, Jimmy Howard had 31 saves. They had a couple of opportunities to score. During the second period, the Red Wings had a 5-on-3 power play but did not successfully convert. During the third period, Justin Abdelkader's shot was shut out by Rask. The 3-0 win by the Bruins gave Rask the fourth shutout of his playoff career, reports USA Today. He also had 23 saves during the match.
ABC News noted that Claude Julien, coach of the Boston Bruins, denied that they had a commanding lead by saying, "I would never say that." He added, "It hasn't been easy, let's not kid ourselves. We've been fortunate enough in the last two games to get leads."
Mike Babcock, coach of the Detroit Red Wings said, "They were better than us all night, but we gave them two goals."
Julien commended his team for their defensive efforts. He said that blocking shots is part of their defensive game and his players would not hesitate to put their bodies and sticks on the line to prevent goals. According to Rask, he tried to track down the puck as much as he could and rely on other teammates for the rebound.
