Masters 2014: First Timer Bill Haas Leads Tournament's First Round

UPDATE: Bubba Watson has already won his second Masters Tournament.

Bill Haas contends to win a major title for the first time at the Masters 2014 tournament. Haas' best finish in four appearances at the Masters is tying for 20th place. He has won the PGA Tour five times but never finished in the top ten in a major tournament. He has played at Augusta National Golf Club but never broke 70 before April 10, 2014. 

Haas started the 2014 Masters on top with a 4-under 68, giving him a 1-stroke lead. In the first round, he had two bogeys and six birdies to get 68. Phil Mickelson, who won the Masters three times, hit a 4-over 76, tying for 67th place. Adam Scott, who won the 2013 Masters, hit a tee shot into the water on the 12th and ended with a double-bogey. At 12th place at minus-1 are Rory McIlroy, Fred Couples and Jordan Spieth. Haas only holds a one-shot lead over Adam Scoot, Louis Oosthuizen and Bubba Watson, in a BBC report. Jason Day and Henrik Stenson are also highly favored to enter the top ten within the week. 

Many players agree that the Augusta course is one of the most difficult they have ever played in. Haas' best finish in a major is tying for 12th place at the 2011 PGA Championship. His great uncle, Bob Goalby, earned the much-coveted green jacket in 1968. Bill is the son of Jay Haas, who is a familiar face in the PGA Tour as well. 

Bill said, "I know that I can't expect too much," he added, "You've got to go out there and keep playing golf, try to hit that fairway on number one." 

He hit a bogey at the first hole, a birdie at the second, fourth and eighth holes and more birdies at the 13th and 14th holes. He dropped one shot at the 17th hole but managed to recover at the 18th to conclude on top of all other big names in the sport, according to a Fox News report.
