If "X-Men: Days of Future Past" screenwriter Simon Kinberg had his say, fans of Jennifer Lawrence might just see a Mystique spin-off film. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the screenwriter revealed, "I love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there's so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo."
"X-Men" franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner also expressed interest in taking the shape-shifting character on a solo adventure on film, notes Entertainment Weekly. But Mystique is not the only character that Donner is allegedly considering.
"There was a regime [at the studio] that didn't see the worth in [spin-offs], and the current people who run Fox understand, embrace it, and we're going to do right by it," Donner told the outlet.
The producer adds, "I'd like to do Gambit. I'd like to do Deadpool. We'll see. There's a lot of really great characters."
It isn't clear if there would be enough interest on a Mystique spin-off but Entertainment Weekly has conducted a poll to verify. Results show that readers most want a Deadpool flick (24%), then Gambit (21%), X-Force (19%), Storm (17%), Mystique (11%), and lastly Magneto (8%), says the outlet.
Fan comments on a rumored Mystique spin-off at ComingSoon also show not much interest. "Delving too deeply into the Mystique character will effectively ruin her...mystique...as it were. A stand-alone film is not necessary," reads one comment. "There is no interest in a mystique movie. Jennifer Lawrence is a talented actress but mystique plays better as part of an ensemble. Not solo," echoed another.
Fans of the actress will still be seeing her play Mystique with other mutants, though. "X-Men: Days of Future Past" is due out May 23. A rumored "X-Men: Apocalypse" is also reportedly set for a May 27, 2016 release date.
