"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is set to win the box office for a second weekend in a row.
Last weekend the Marvel film broke the April record and opened to $95 million. The film performed exceptionally well in its first weekend and has already made $113 million. With very little competition yet again, expect the movie to make $43 million over the weekend.
"Rio 2" will most likely land in second place. Fox is opening the movie in 3,948 theaters and hopes to repeat the success of the first installment. That movie made $143 million back in 2011. However, the new film is receiving mixed reviews and that could prove to be a tough selling point. Still, with no competition from any other animated films, expect "Rio 2" to open with $40 million.
Relativity will also open "Oculus" this weekend. The movie will bow in 2,648 theaters and with good reviews. While it won't reach the heights of "The Conjuring," expect this horror movie to open with $11.5 million.
Meanwhile, Kevin Costner's "Draft Day" will have a tough time drawing audiences. While films like "Moneyball" and "Remember the Titans" were big hits, this football drama is being released at a time when the Football season is over. Additionally, Costner just suffered from a bomb at the box office showing that he is no longer a box office draw. Lionsgate is releasing the movie in 2,781 theaters and is likely to open with $10.5 million.
Darren Aronofksy's "Noah" will continue to suffer from a disappointing box office performance. The movie has already made $76 million, but it is unlikely to break its $125 million budget. With three new releases and a stirring controversy, the film is likely to make $9 to $11 million this weekend.
Meanwhile, "Divergent" will continue its successful run. The movie is likely to gross $6 million and bring its total to $120 million.
Fox Searchlight will once again expand "The Grand Budapest Hotel" into 1,464 theaters. The movie has made $34 million up to this point and should make another $5 million this weekend.
"Son of God" will be re-released just in time for the holidays. The film, which made $58 million back in February, is likely to attract the churchgoers and religious communities.
In arthouse theaters, Sony Pictures Classics will expand "The Raid" into 954 theaters. The movie is following in the footsteps of the original movie, which made $4 million in the U.S.
Meanwhile, the Weinstein Company will release "The Railway Man" in four theaters. The film has garnered positive reviews and even has some Oscar buzz.
Sony Classics will also release Jim Jarmush's festival hit "Only Lovers Left Alive." The movie has rave reviews and will also open in four theaters.
Meanwhile, Roadside Attractions will release "Joe" starring Nicolas Cage and Tye Sheridan. The movie will be on VOD, iTunes and in 48 theaters. Based on the release strategy, the movie does not have high hopes for box office success during its theatrical run, but it has rave reviews and critics have called about Cage's performance a return to form for the actor.
