The first reviews of "The Amazing Spider-Man" are in and critics are not very enthusiastic.
The film, which stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, tells the story of Peter Parker, who runs the gauntlet as the mysterious company Oscorp sends up a slew of supervillains against him, impacting his life.
The film currently has an 88 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes, but if the reviews are read closely audiences will notice that the good reviews aren't incredibly favorable.
Guy Lodge of Variety gave the film a good review, but he also complained about it being redundant. He said, "Redundancy remains a problem, but this overlong superhero sequel gets by on sound, fury and star chemistry."
The Digital Spy's review by Simon Reynolds is being classified as a good review, but it is far from the most positive. He said,"'Amazing Spider-Man 2' seems more like an exercise in calculated franchise architecture than its does a cohesive stand-alone blockbuster."
Meanwhile, the Hollywood Reporter's Leslie Felperin wrote, "The plot gets itself tangled up in multiple villain strands, but in the main this installment is emotionally weightier and more satisfying than its predecessor."
With these mixed reviews it is unlikely this film will receive an overwhelming amount of positive reviews. The film has once again crammed three villains into one story like Sony did in the third installment in 2007.
That year, "Spider-Man 3" broke records at the box office, but ultimately failed to gross anywhere close to the first two installments. The reason for the underwhelming response was the disappointment of many fans. Reviews were incredibly negative due to the unfocused storyline and the inclusion of Venom in the movie also generated terrible word of mouth.
"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" already comes in with disgruntled fans; the 2012 reboot could not live up to the box office success of the original and many critics stated that the film was essentially the same story as the original 2002 film. Additionally, a number of fanboys could not accept a new cast, especially when the original series was so recent and word of mouth was so negative.
Sony should begin to worry about "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." While the film has included fan favorite villains such as the Goblin, the Rhino and Electro, this may once again dissuade fans from seeing the movie. The trailers have emphasized a number of action sequences, which could prove favorable for Sony, but could also emphasize the excess that turned fans off in the third installment.
The studio must also worry about its competition. While "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" will have been in theaters for a month, it will most likely continue to hold strong. The following weekend the studio will have to deal with Seth Rogen's "The Neighbors," which is tracking strongly and with good word of mouth from SXSW Film Festival, the movie could prove tough competition. Warner Bros. will also release "Godzilla" two weeks after, and "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and "Maleficient" could also outpace the "Spider-Man" film.
While there are still a few weeks left until the release, Sony must look at the early reviews and see how they can build buzz a different way.
"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" will be released on May 2.
