Billy Cub has served as the unofficial mascot of the Chicago Cubs for years. He has been a familiar figure in stadiums and sports bars, particularly during games, and is known as a friendly fun-loving character.
However, baseball fans saw a different side of Billy Cub, with John Paul Weier inside, when he blew his top and punched John Barleycorn, a sports bar fan, after the latter removed his huge bear head, according to Bleacher Report.
A video showed Billy Cub socializing with other Chicago Cubs fans in a Wrigleyville bar. He was approached by a female fan who wanted a hug. While the two were wrapped around each other's arms, a guy walked over behind Billy Cub and took his mascot head off by the ears. The mascot immediately turned around and after a short line, punched the guy before other patrons intervened to stop the fight.
The guy was drunk and actually provoked the mascot several times before the incident. In an NBC report, the guy was with a bachelor party and tried to trip the mascot three times. He also threw himself into Billy Cub, punching his back and shoving the bear into the bar in an attempt to start a fight. The mascot ignored his actions until the guy finally took his head off.
The news even reached the Cubs. Spokesman Julian Green said it was not the first time that Billy Cub had issues with fans. He said, "We have received complaints from fans, mistakenly believing Billy Cub to be associated with the Cubs."
Weier, however, said that he was not the same person wearing the mascot costume in previous altercations. The Cubs officially introduced Clark the Cub and even sent Weier a long letter, ordering him to stop being Billy Cub. Weier remains adamant and responded that he does not mind going to court to defend himself, in a report by the Chicago Tribune.
