The U.S. Open had an exhilarating day Friday with top seeded players advancing to third and fourth rounds and another surprising upset by Brit Laura Robson.
No. 2-ranked Serbian Novak Djokovic demolished Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Silva in three sets 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2. According to SB Nation, Djokovic won the three straight sets against Dutra Silva in just 99 minutes.
In another morning matchup, No. 4-ranked Spaniard David Ferrer defeated Igor Sijsling from the Netherlands in three sets 6-2, 6-3 and 7-6(12). According to HuffPost Sports, Ferrer took 2 hours and 7 minutes to surpass Sijsling.
American Andy Roddick, ranked No. 20, defeated Australian Bernard Tomic in three sets 6-3, 6-4 and 6-0. Roddick, who announced his retirement on Thursday, reached the third round with his victory over Tomic at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
In the women's side, sisters Serena and Venus Williams dominated their second round doubles match against Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Kristina Mladenovic in two sets 6-4 and 6-0. No. 3-ranked Russian Maria Sharapova destroyed American Mallory Burdette in two easy sets of 6-1 and 6-1. Friday night saw No. 1-ranked Victoria Azarenka defeated Jie Zheng from China in two sets 6-0 and 6-1.
Great Britain's Laura Robson played another surprising upset on Friday, defeating China's Na Li in three sets 6-4, 6-7(5) and 6-2. Robson, the youngest player in the top 100, defeated No. 23-ranked Belgian Kim Clijsters on Wednesday.
Saturday's matches are sure to prove entertaining with No. 4-ranked Serena Williams, No. 1-ranked Roger Federer and No. 3-ranked Andy Murray all scheduled to play.
