Arnold Schwarzenegger will be facing a very busy schedule ahead as the producers of the new "Terminator" saga are planning on shooting three films in a row.
Deadline has learned that Skydance Productions and Paramount Pictures will begin filming "Terminator: Genesis", the first installment in the new trilogy, in Lousiana this year. After that, production for the second and third films will be underway for nine months straight.
Although this strategy, which is very reminiscent of what Peter Jackson did in his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, can effectively hype up the fans for a new "Terminator" storyline, Cinemablend pointed out that it could be potentially risky for the studios involved in the project.
Since a back-to-back production timeline requires a huge budget and stable commitment from those involved in the trilogy, "Terminator: Genesis" will be carrying a huge weight on its shoulders.
In other words, the financial support and development status of the second and third films will depend on the box office success of the first one.
Aside from this, Schwarzenegger's involvement in the project plays a huge factor in the success of the three films. Although his presence in his recent films were nostalgically enjoyable for movie goers, they did not bring the same effect as his old films from his prime years such as the "The Running Man", "Total Recall", "Predator" and the early "Terminator" movies.
With these factors in mind, putting in millions of dollars for three films before establishing how they will be received by the general public might be a dangerous move.
But, as far as "Terminator: Genesis" goes, it seems those involved in the film are doing a pretty good job in incorporating Schwarzenegger's age and laying down a fresh new storyline.
The 66-year-old actor previously revealed details of the plot and said, "The way the character is written, it's a machine underneath. It's this metal skeleton. But above that is human flesh. And the Terminator's flesh ages, just like any other human being's flesh. Maybe not as fast. But it definitely ages."
He added, "Terminator deals a lot with time travel, so there will be a younger T-800 and then what that model does later on when it gets reprogrammed, and who gets a hold of him. So it will be all kinds of interesting twists in the movie."
"Terminator: Genesis" is scheduled to hit theaters on July 1, 2015. Aside from Schwarzenegger, it will star Jai Courtney, Emilia Clarke, Dayo Okeniyi, and Jason Clarke.
