Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher" looks to be set to open at the Cannes Film Festival.

HitFix is reporting that the Sony Classics Pictures picture is set to debut at the Croisette after having been delayed for a number of months.

The movie starring Steve Carrell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffallo tells the story of a stranger-than-fiction true-crime drama based on the autobiography of Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz.

The film was originally set to be released in 2013 and was going to be open the AFI Film Festival. However Sony pulled it from the slate from the festival sighting post-production delays. However other pundits speculated that the move was due to the crowded awards slate. The festival has not confirmed the news but it is likely the film will premiere after a number of months editing.

A spot in the Cannes Film festival can help the film's Oscar buzz especially after the director's first two films "Capote" and "Moneyball" scored Best Picture nominations at the Oscars. However both of those films premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.

"Foxcatcher" has already generated a lot of buzz for Carrell's turn in the movie and if the actor wins the Best Actor prize at the festival he will be a step closer to a Best Actor nod at the Oscars. Recent actors to win the award have included Bruce Dern for "Nebraska," Christoph Waltz for "Inglorious Basterds, Jean Dujardin for "The Artist" and Javier Bardem for "Biutiful." All four actors went on to get nominated at the Academy Awards.

The film has extra buzz because it stars Vanessa Redgrave, Sienna Miller and Anthony Michael Hall and was produced by Megan Ellison, a tree time Oscar nominee who has released a number of critically acclaimed hits including "Zero Dark Thirty," "The Master," "American Hustle" and "Her." The film also reunited Miller with Dan Futterman ("Capote"), who wrote the script. The film also boasts an acclaimed crew including cinematographer Greig Fraser ("Zero Dark Thirty") and Oscar-winning composer Mychael Danna ("Life of Pi").

Cannes Film Festival is one of the most prestigious festivals in the world. It has presented a number of Oscar contenders including 2011 Best Picture winner "The Artist," and 2007 "No Country For Old Men." It has also seen Best Picture nominees "The Tree of Life" and "Amour" win the Palme d'Or.  Other contenders which debuted at the festival include "Mystic River," ""The Pianist," "Nebraska," and "Inglorious Basterds."

Last year the event screened a number of acclaimed films "Blue is the Warmest Color," "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Heli," "The Past," "The Great Beauty," and "Only Lovers Left Alive."

The Cannes Film Festival will open with Oliver Dahan's biopic "Grace of Monaco" starring Nicole Kidman and Tim Roth. The event also announced Andrea Arnold will be president of the judge of the Critics Week sidebar. The festival will announce its lineup on April 17 but it is speculated that David Cronenberg's "Maps to the Stars," Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu's "Birdman" and Mike Leigh's "Mr. Turner" could be part of the competition.
