Despite years of futility, it finally seems like Liverpool has come to fore and become a top contender to win the Premier League. Brendan Rodgers' side finished in first place after the weekend and the side remains the team to beat as the Premier League heads into its final weeks.
Liverpool currently has 71 points with six games left to play; the team holds a two-point lead on Chelsea and is seven ahead of Arsenal. Both of those teams have played 32 games. The only team that remains in contention to pass Liverpool is Manchester City. The Citizens have 67 points in 30 games; if they win both matches then they would have 73 points. However, City still has to play at Liverpool in just a few weeks and that match will likely determine which team will wind up winning the title overall.
Liverpool holds a home record of 14 wins, one draw and one loss with 48 goals scored and only 13 conceded; the lone defeat came against Southampton back on Sept. 21. Meanwhile Manchester City has struggled on the road throughout the year and holds a record of eight wins, four draws and four losses with 32 goals scored and 19 conceded.
Manchester City did manage to beat Liverpool 2-1 back on Dec. 26 when the two sides met at the Ethiad Stadium.
Liverpool also faces a huge task against Chelsea on April 27, but fortunately the team will be at Anfield as well. When the two teams met at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea managed a 2-1 win over Liverpool, but the Blues have a record of seven wins, four draws and five losses away from home. More importantly, Chelsea has lost two of its last three Premier League tilts and has lost points in four of its last 10.
The rest of the schedule looks very promising for Liverpool. The team gets three of its final six at home, including a final home match against Newcastle United; this is arguably the third most difficult tie for Liverpool in the remaining stretch and it is fortunate that the team gets to contest the game at home. The three away games are against minnow sides like West Ham United, Norwich City and Crystal Palace; those teams have combined for a total of 26 wins on the year (four more than Liverpool) and none of them has more than 34 points on the season.
The beauty of the remaining schedule for Liverpool is that Chelsea will have to finish out the stretch by also playing in Champions League competition; even though Paris Saint-Germain provides a huge challenge many expect the Blues to play well into the semifinals. Chelsea's remaining schedule is rather easy with no other featuring prominently in the league standings.
Manchester City's has three away games, including one against fourth place Everton; that could end in a draw or loss for City, further aiding Liverpool's mission.
Will Liverpool win the Premier League this season; it is looking increasingly likely that the team will succeed in this task.
