MTV reality show, "Jersey Shore," will come to an end this season, the network announced on Thursday. The show, which stars Nicole 'Snooki" Polizzi and Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino, will premiere for its sixth and final season on October 4.
The network announced that it would be airing a full-day marathon on September 6, ending with a one-hour special titled "Gym, Tan, Look Back." The cast infamously made the phrase "gym, tan, laundry" popular during the show's run. The pre-season premier marathon will also have cast members commenting on the red carpet of the MTV Video Music Awards, set to air that day.
According to E! Online, "Jersey Shore" became a huge hit after premiering in December 2009 but has seen a decline in ratings over the past few seasons. The show has filmed in three locations, the Jersey Shore, Miami and Italy, and has had two spinoff shows. E! Online reported that MTV has ordered a second season of "Snooki & JWoww" but has yet to reach a decision on the "Pauly D Project."
Cast members took to Twitter on Thursday after the announcement was made. Snooki, who recently gave birth to a baby boy, tweeted, "Yes, sadly it's true. This upcoming season of Jersey Shore will be our last. But it was fricken INSANE. I will always love my roomies!"
Fellow cast member, DJ Pauly D retweeted fans' reactions and tweeted, "I Must Say, Sad To See It Go, But Am So Blessed To Have Been Apart of This!!!!#TeamDJPaulyD Lives On."
MTV also announced that viewers will be able to see exclusive bonus programming each week following the episodes.
The "Jersey Shore" season six premieres October 4 on MTV.
