On March 28, a number of new films will enter the marketplace. Here's a list of this week's new releases.
"Noah" : Darren Arronofky's first film since "Black Swan" will finally hit the silver screen. The bible epic, which will be distributed by Paramount, tells the story of a man chosen by God to undertake a momentous mission of rescue before an apocalyptic flood destroys the world. The film stars Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins and Emma Watson and is being promoted as one of the year's biggest blockbusters. While film has been part of a number of controversies, it has garnered rave reviews and is likely to open number one at the North American box office.
"Sabotage" : Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to the silver screen in director David Ayer's thriller. The film, also starring Terrence Howard and Sam Worthington, tells the story of members from the elite DEA task force who find themselves being taken down one by one after they rob a drug cartel safe house. The movie currently has no reviews and given Schwarzenegger's recent box office track record, this film does not look to generate buzz from audiences or critics. Open Road will release the film.
"Cesar Chavez" : Diego Luna's new film about the civil-rights activist and labor organizer opened at the SXSW Film Festival where it garnered mixed reviews and very little buzz. Lionsgate is aiming the movie at Latino moviegoers and does not seem to confident in the film as it is only releasing it in 600 theaters. The film stars Michael Pena, America Ferrera, Rosario Dawson, Wes Bentley and John Malkovich and Liosngate will distribute it.
"Breathe In": Drake Doremus' Sundance hit will be released a year after its premiere. The movie is Doremus' followup to his successful "Like Crazy" which won the Grand Jury Prize a few years ago. "Breathe In," which stars Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, and Amy Ryan, tells the story of a foreign exchange student who arrives in a small upstate New York town and challenges the dynamics of her host family's relationships and alters their lives forever. Cohen Media Group will release the film in limited release after scoring generally positive reviews.
"Hide Your Smiling Faces": Tribeca film will release the critically acclaimed Indie film theatrically and on VOD. The movie, which premiered at the Berlin Festival and Tirbeca Film Festival, tells the story of two adolescent brothers who must confront changing relationships, the mystery of nature, and their own mortality after a neighborhood accident.
"The Raid 2" : Sony Pictures Classics will release Gareth Evans' sequel to the successful film "The Raid: Redemption." The film continues a short time after the first film and tells the story of Rama who goes undercover with the thugs of Jakarta and plans to bring down the syndicate and uncover the corruption within his police force. The studio will release it in limited release.
Two films currently in theaters will open nationwide after successful limited runs. The first film to be released will be "The Grand Budapest Hotel". Wes Anderson's film garnered $12 million in limited release and will expand to 800 theaters. Meanwhile Focus Features will expand "Bad Words" to 600 theaters after two weeks in limited release.
