Christian Bale has become David Fincher's first choice to play Steve Jobs in the upcoming film biopic which will be written by Aaron Sorkin.
After meeting with Sony's chairman Amy Pascal, the director said that he would only direct the picture if he could get Bale for the role. Fincher has not confirmed his involvement in the film but there is a high possibility he will direct it.
Pascal and Fincher already have a relationship as they worked on "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." According to the Wrap "Pascal believes in him as a filmmaker and is inclined to keep him happy." According to the Wrap, Pascal also has a good relationship with Bale especially after working with him on "American Hustle."
The film is also being produced by Scott Rudin who produced both Fincher's "The Social Network" and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and as a result could be a good fit for the upcoming film. Mark Gordon, who is also producing the work, has yet to work with Fincher.
The film is being written by Sorkin and when the writer and director worked together on "The Social Network," the film was hailed as one of the best of the best film of that year and won every single major critics group as well as the Golden Globe.
Bale is known for being very difficult when choosing scripts. His latest films have been from a number of auteur directors including Terrence Malick, David O. Russell, Christopher Nolan, Werner Herzog and Ridley Scott. As a result there is a possibility the actor will choose to work with Fincher.
Fincher is considered one of the best directors working in the business. He has directed a number of different films from crime noirs to fantasy films to dramas. He has also been nominated for two Academy Awards for his work on "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "The Social Network." Fincher recently completed his latest film entitled "Gone Girl" and the film stars Ben Affleck in the lead role as well as Neil Patrick Harris and Rosamund Pike.
Bale won the Academy Award for Best Supporting role in 2010 for his work on "The Fighter." Last year was nominated for his work Oscar in the lead role category for his work on "American Hustle." The actor has also received acclaim for his work on "The Dark Knight" trilogy, "American Psycho," "The Machinist" and "Empire of the Sun." Bale will next be seen in the upcoming "Exodus" which hits theaters in December.
Sony's "Jobs" film will be the second about the famed Apple creator. Last year Open Road released "Jobs" starring Ashton Kutcher and received terrible reviews. The film ended up crashing at the box office and only made $35 million worldwide.
Sony is confident that with a great director, a good budget and a great cast, the biopic will interest a bigger audience. However, if Fincher and Bale take on the project, the studio will most likely have to wait until 2015 for production begin as both actor and director will be promoting their upcoming films.
