"Need for Speed" is set to win the box office this weekend beating out new releases "Tyler Perry's Single Mom's Club" and "300: Rise of An Empire."
The Disney-Dreamworks release is currently not tracking as well as other drag race films such as the "Fast and Furious" franchise and is likely to open in the mid-$20 million range. The film is also opening in international markets, but "Need for Speed" is unlikely to become the big blockbuster franchise the studio hoped for.
The other new release, "Single Moms Club," is not tracking any better. The film is expected to debut between the $18 to $20 million range. However, sometimes Tyler Perry movies outperform and it is hard to track the films.
Last weekend's box office winner, "300: Rise of An Empire," is expected to have a major drop. The movie is projected to bring in another $20 million. The film is underperforming compared to the original and it is unlikely this sequel will reach the success of the 2006 predecessor. "300: Rise of an Empire has currently made $56 million and is expected to hit the $80 million mark by the end of the weekend.
"Mr. Peabody and Sherman," however, will have a better hold. Analysts are predicting the film will make $20 million. The movie had a disappointing opening but word of mouth is high and could help the film regain traction. Having already made $39 million, expect the animated flick to end the weekend with $62 million.
The Liam Neeson action thriller "Non-Stop" will have a decent drop and could make $9.5 million. The movie has already made $56 million and could end with $66 million by the end of the weekend.
With a strong fanbase and plenty of buzz, the Kickstarter-funded "Veronica Mars" opens in 291 theaters this weekend. If fans turn up in masses the movie could bring in at least $2 million. However, considering its current theater count it will be harder for the film to draw audiences until the movie ultimately opens in wide release, which Warner Bros is planning later in the month.
"The Grand Budapest Hotel" will expand to 66 theaters after opening to record breaking numbers. Buzz is strong for the film and with great reviews, analysts estimate the movie could bring in north of $2 million. That would continue the film's record numbers. As Fox Searchlight continues to expand the movie, this could become Wes Anderson's highest grossing film.
Jason Bateman's "Bad Words" is opening in six theaters. The film has positive reviews but it is not the type of movie that draws art house audiences. However, given the star power and positive buzz, the movie could open to solid numbers. Focus Features is expected to open the movie nationwide on March 21.
"Enemy" will also open in limited release. A24 is releasing the film but there is currently no tracking on the film. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal and is directed by the "Prisoners" director Denis Villaneuve.
