On March 14, a number of new films will enter the marketplace. Here's a list of this week's new releases.
"Need for Speed" - The drag racing movie became successful after the "Fast and Furious" series and now Dreamworks is taking a stab at the genre with its new film. "Need for Speed" tells the story of a street racer who is framed by a wealthy business associate who joins a cross country race with revenge in mind. His ex-partner, learning of the plan, places a massive bounty on his head as the race begins. The film stars Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Rami Malek and Imogen Poots. The film currently has a 33 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes and based on preliminary numbers, this film will struggle to reach the audience of "Fast and Furious."
"Tyler Perry's The Single Moms Club" - Tyler Perry's latest film tells the story of a group of single mothers from different walks of life who bond and create a support group that helps them find comedy in the obstacles of life. Unlike his recent films, this Perry film is multi-racial, which could easily bring a bigger demographic to the film. The movie stars Nia Long, Amy Smart, Perry, Eddie Cibrian, William Levy, Perry, and Zulay Henao and will be distributed by Lionsgate.
"Veronica Mars" - After years of trying to put the movie together, Rob Thomas' Kickstarter-funded film comes to theaters with Warner Bros. distributing. The movie reunites Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, Tin Majorino and Francis Capra and tells the story of Veronica Mars who gets pulled back to her hometown—just in time for her high school reunion—in order to help her old flame Logan Echolls, who's embroiled in a murder mystery. The film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival where it received mixed reviews. Warner Bros. is releasing the film in limited release before expanding nationwide.
"Enemy" - After a success with "Prisoners" Jake Gyllenhaal reunites with Denis Villaneuve. The new film will be released by A24 and tells the story of a man who seeks out his exact look-alike after spotting him in a movie. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival where it received great reviews. It currently has a 93 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes with critics stating, "[It's] mysterious enough that many viewers will insist on seeing it twice." The movie will be released in limited theaters.
"Bad Words" - Jason Bateman's directorial debut marks the first film released by Focus Features with their new CEO Peter Schelssel. The new film, starring Bateman, Kathryn Hahn and Allison Janney, tells the story of a spelling bee loser who sets out to exact revenge by finding a loophole and attempting to win as an adult. The film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival where it received rave reviews.
"Le Week-End" - Roger Mitchell's latest film stars Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan. The movie, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and later played at the New York Film Festival, tells the story of an old married couple who take a trip to Paris attempting to rejuvenate their marriage. Latinos Post saw the film at the NY Film festival and said the film "is not only abundant in charm and delight, but it is a highly sophisticated work of art that analyzes the difficulty of marriage and love as life reaches the finish line."
