Sony has announced that David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin could reunite to collaborate on the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic.
The Hollywood Reporter announced that the filmmaker is in talks to direct the untitled movie based on Walteer Isaacson's best-selling biography of the Apple co-founder. While the deal has yet to be be confirmed, Sorkin has finished the script, and Scott Rudin, Mark Gordon and Guymon Casady have signed on to produce.
If Fincher joins, it will be an all-around reunion. The team—Fincher, Sorkin and the producers—previously worked on "The Social Network," one of the most successful films of 2010. The movie garnered rave reviews and scored a 96 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also won the Golden Globe, Critics Choice and swept the Critics societies. It was also nominated for eight Academy Awards and won three including one for Sorkin's screenplay.
The film was also a financial success, raking in $96.9 million domestically and $224 million internationally.
Sony plans to make a film similar to "The Social Network." According to the THR, "Jobs was a complicated visionary who became a polarizing figure. Under Jobs' watch, Apple revolutionized several businesses, including personal computers, music, computer-generated animation and mobile phones. In the process, he became known as one of the greatest innovators of his generation. At the same time, he was unapologetic about his difficult personality, was at one point ousted at Apple and was criticized for the company's harsh treatment of workers in China who assembled Apple products."
Sony began the project in October 2011, just weeks after Jobs died from pancreatic cancer. Sorkin then began writing the script in 2012 with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak participating in the film as a consultant.
No actor is attached to play the role of Jobs, but given Fincher's previous films he is likely to choose an A-list star. Fincher is known for choosing similar types of films, especially crime dramas. He recently directed "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," and his past films include "Zodiac" and "Fight Club." He is also known for being extremely picky with his projects, taking his time to release each one of his movies. His latest film, "Gone Girl," will be released this year and stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.
The new Jobs film will be the second movie so far about the iconic tech innovator. In 2013 Open Road released "Jobs," a terribly reviewed film starring Ashton Kutcher as Jobs. The movie failed to generate buzz and attention, even though it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
Sony's latest venture into Jobs' life will be more high profile and due to the pedigree of those involved and the popularity of Isaacson's book—for which he obtained unrivaled access to Jobs during the last years of his life—the film will generate more attention. If Fincher joins the project it will be one of the most anticipated films of the release year and will be a major awards contender.
