For American troops, one of the hardest challenges they must face is feeding for extended periods of time on barely-diversified, and sometimes unsavory menus.
This is why recent research developed by a team of scientists in a military laboratory in Massachusetts are being monitored by military officials, since it could lead to a new era in food for American troops.
A pizza which can be stored for three years, without refrigeration or being frozen, and that can still conserve its properties is the most recent project in which researchers from the US Army Natick Soldier Systems Center are working on, a development that could leave behind the current individual rations - known as MREs - which substituted canned food in 1981, according to The National Post.
These rations were designed to feed soldiers in combat zones or in regions where field kitchens cannot be assembled; however, the idea of an "eternal pizza", one of the favorite foods of American troops, could completely revolutionize the way troops are fed.
"Basically, you can take a pizza, package it and leave it on the shelf for 3 years and it will still be edible," said Michelle Richardson, a nutrition scientist of the Natick Soldier Systems Center, according to a report by the Associated Press, quoted by ABC.
Still under development, its developers assure that this wondrous pizza will manage to keep the delicious taste that have made this a favorite not only among American troops, but among all Americans.
Jill Bates, who runs the taste laboratory, told the AP that the latest tests with prototype pepperoni pizzas have been satisfactory and it's expected that the final result will be completely enjoyable by soldiers.
"It kind of tastes like a typical pizza you'd make at home and just took out from the oven or the toaster. The only thing missing from the experience would be that it's no longer hot when you eat it, due to room temperature," said Bates, quoted by ABC.
