Can Canada live up to expectations at the Sochi winter Olympics? The men's hockey team will take its first step on Thursday when it takes on Norway.
Led by arguably the most potent offense in the tournament, many are questioning whether the team has the defense and goaltending to not only make a deep run, but win the tournament. Canada managed the feat four years ago when it beat the United States in overtime thanks to a Sidney Crosby goal. The Pittsburgh Penguins center, often called the "Best player in the world," will center the team's first line while being flanked by Jeff Carter of the LA Kings and Penguins teammate Chris Kunitz.
"Every game's a tough game," said NY Islanders center John Tavares, according to NHL.com. "I remember World Championships for me in Slovakia. We beat Norway 3-2. It was a very close, tight game. They're a team that competes hard and they have a tremendous skill set. They made a lot of plays that game. Obviously some of these countries that may not be as well-known have played together for a long time. That makes a big difference and all those teams are going to be ready to play."
Both teams also have to contend with Austria and Finland; the latter side is considered another dark horse to take home the gold thanks to its terrific arsenal of goaltenders.
Prediction: Canada destroys Norway 5-1 in the opener.
Start Time: The puck drops at 12 p.m. EST.
