The Metropolitan Opera has announced its 2014-15 season.
The season will open with a new production of Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" directed by Richard Eyre. The production will star Ildar Abdrazakov in the title role, Marlis Petersen as Susana, Isabel Leonard as Cherubino, Peter Mattei as the Count, and Marina Poplavskaya as the Countess. James Levine will conduct his first opening night in three years. The opera will also be sung with second cast that includes Danielle De Niese, Mariusz Kwiecien and Erwin Schrott.
The Met will also present seven other new productions, four of which will be part of double bills. John Adams' acclaimed opera "The Death of Klinghoffer" will receive a new production by Tom Morris. The English National Opera co-production is set to star Paolo Szot, Michaela Martens, Alan Opie and Aubrey Allicock and will be conducted by David Robertson.
Tchiakovsky's one-act opera "Iolanta" will make its New York Premiere in Mariusz Trelinski's acclaimed Baden Baden production. The opera will star Anna Netrebko, Piotr Beczala, Alexy Markov, and Alexei Tanovitski. On the same night Bartok's "Duke Bluebeard's Castle will also make its Metropolitan Premiere in a new production by Trelinski, which will star Nadja Michael and Petrenko. Valery Gergiev will conduct both works.
On New Year's Eve the Met Opera will also reign in the year with another operetta. This time, Lehar's "The Merry Widow" will receive a new production by Susan Stroman and will star Renee Fleming and Nathan Gunn. Susan Graham will also reprise her acclaimed take on the title role later in the season.
Pablo Curran's acclaimed Santa Fe production of Rossini's "La Donna Del Lago" will make its Met premiere with Joyce Didonato, Juan Diego Florez, and Daniella Barcellona in her Met debut. Michele Mariotti will conduct.
David McVicar will also return to the Met directing the double bill "Cavalleria Rusticana" and "Pagliacci." Marcelo Alvarez will sing both works with Fabio Luisi conducting. Eva Maria Westbroek will sing Cavalleria Rusticana while Patricia Racette will sing Nedda in "Pagliacci."
Notable revivals include Verdi's "Macbeth" with Netrebko, Zeljko Lucic, Joseph Calleja, and Rene Pape. Massenet's "Manon" will also return with Vittorio Grigolo and Diana Damrau.
The Met will also present the original French language "Don Carlos" with Yonghoon Lee, and Barbara Frittoli.
Jonas Kaufmann will reprise his take on Don Jose in Eyre's acclaimed "Carmen" with Anita Rachvelishvili taking on the leading role..
Music director Levine will also lead the orchestra in Verdi's "Ernani," Wagner's "Der Meistersinger von Nurnberg," Stravinsky's "The Rake's Progress," and Offenbach's "Les Contes d'Hoffman."
