The Academy Award race has been shaken up after the American Cinema Editors Association gave out their awards.
"Captain Phillips" led the awards taking home the Best Dramatic Editing Award for Christopher Rouse. Meanwhile, "American Hustle" won the Best Comedic Editing award for Jay Cassidy, Alan Baumgarten and Crispin Struthers.
The wins are significant because "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity" were the front-runners to win the award but both lost in the dramatic competition.
While the EDDIE awards don't always determine what film will win the Best Film award, they do determine which editors will win the Oscar. The two winners are both nominated for Best Picture and it is the first time since 2011 when two Best Picture nominees won both categories. In 2011 "The Descendants" won for Drama and "The Artist" won for Comedy. However, both films ended up losing the Oscar to "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."
Splitting the award between two Best Picture nominees could possibly hurt both films. The Academy may not know which film to choose and as a result could end up picking one of the other three Oscar nominees. The other three include "Gravity," which was presumed to be the front-runner, "12 Years a Slave" and "Dallas Buyer Club."
The EDDIE awards also handed out the award for Best Edited Documentary to "20 Feet from Stardom" and the Best Edited Animated Film to "Frozen." Meanwhile, Paul Greengrass was given the Golden EDDIE award for his achievement in film. "Behind the Candelabra" won the Best Edited Miniseries or Motion Picture for TV.
