Republican legislators in the House of Representatives presented a proposal on Thursday that supports the legalization of the immigration status of thousands of undocumented immigrants in the US, as long as they are not granted US citizenship and meet a series of requirements.
According to Reuters, Republican legislators presented a declaration of principles that offers a way to legalize the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the US.
The new measure gives new hope for the long-awaited Immigration Reform to be debated and approved, after the first project approved by the Senate in June, 2013 stagnated in Congress due to the Republican majority.
It's a measure that might accept undocumented immigrants without further complications.
According to a report published last December by The Huffington Post, to many foreigners anxiously awaiting a solution to their immigration status, getting citizenship is much less important for most undocumented immigrants living in the US than becoming legal residents.
This is why the document presented by Republicans on Thursday could be accepted by Democrats if the opinions of undocumented immigrants is taken into account.
According to La Opinión, the proposal says that undocumented immigrants could "live legally and without fear in the US, but only if they're willing to admit their guilt, submit to a rigorous check of their backgrounds, pay significant fines and back taxes, and fully learn the English language and can sustain themselves and their families (without government help)."
It's expected that spokesmen for the Republican Party make a statement in the coming hours.
