"The Sign of Three", the second episode of the third season of "Sherlock' aired in American Television last January 26. Those who saw the episode were treated to a glimpse of the title character's more sensitive side as he prepares for his colleague's wedding.
Metro reports the episode opened with Inspector Lestrade preparing to arrest a criminal when they receive an urgent message from Sherlock. Immediately, Lestrade abandons the case to come to the aid of the consulting detective. The inspector soon finds out the Sherlock's big emergency was simply writing his best man speech for John Watson's wedding to Mary Morstan.
Holmes considers Watson's wedding as "the end of an era". And through the duty of best man, the show used an interesting approach in showing how the detective struggled to analyze and overcome his emotions for his dear friend
During the wedding, Holmes tried as best as he could to explain, and most importantly to understand for himself, the importance of Watson's friendship. Of course, in true Holmes-fashion, the speech was a collision between embarrassing and awkward.
But using his calculated logic, Holmes managed to pull through as he turned his incessant ramblings into a heart-felt speech. Through flashbacks, viewers were able to understand the two's relationship. Holmes cited previous cases such as "The Bloody Guardsman" and "The Mayfly Man" in recounting Watson's importance in their partnership.
In an article on TV, Holmes realized that even though he was the one who solved the cases, he is unable to direct his attention to the most important aspect of any case: the victims. This is where Watson comes in. He is the side of their partnership that looks out for the victims and actually saves lives. He even saved Holmes' life a couple of times on the show, literally and figuratively. He is the one who keeps the main character "human" by saving him from living a life devoid of human emotion.
As proof of Holmes affections, here is an excerpt from his speech courtesy of MTV News: "John, you have endured war, and injury, and tragic loss - so sorry again about that last one - so know this, today you sit between the woman you have made your wife and the man you have saved. In short, the two people who love you most all this world."
