Nicole Kidman will be heading back to the Cannes Film festival as her latest film "Grace of Monaco" will open the festivities.
The Cannes Film Festival has announced the Oliver Dahan film will be unveiled after a number of setbacks. The film was originally previewed at the festival in 2013 and was supposed to be released on Nov. 27 in time for awards.
However, the company delayed the film due to disagreements with the director and moved it to a March 14, 2014 release date. However, Harvey Weinstein said the film was not ready while Dahan claimed that Weinstein wanted to make cuts to a plotline involving a clash between Grace Kelly's husband Prince Rainer III and French President Charles de Gaulle. The company later said that the cuts were suggestions and that the company had no creative control over the project.
Having set a deadline and a release date, it was assumed that the film would be released and was complete. However, earlier this week the Weinstein Company pulled "Grace of Monaco" from the calendar yet again and instead placed it under TBD. According to Indiewire, the reason for the delay was because the final cut had not been delivered to the Weinstein Company.
With the film opening the festivities, "Grace of Monaco" has emerged as a potential Oscar candidate. Many films that open at Cannes end up receiving Oscar nominations, such as "Nebraska," "Amour," "The Tree of Life," and "The Artist."
Kidman last served on the jury at the festival and also attended in 2012 when her film "The Paperboy" premiered in competition. The actress is best known for her work in "Moulin Rouge," "The Hours," "Rabbit Hole," and "Cold Mountain."
"Grace of Monaco" also stars Tim Roth Frank Langella, Paz Vega, Parker Posey, and Sir Derek Jacobi. The film is slated to premiere on May 14 but no domestic release date has been announced.
