Hugh Jackman has officially joined Warner Bros.' upcoming film "Pan."
Variety reports that Jackman will play the iconic role of Blackbeard. The news comes a day after Variety reported that Garrett Hedlund was in talks to play the role of Captain Hook.
Jackman had previously been rumored for the role after it was confirmed that Spanish actor Javier Bardem had passed on the character.
"Pan" is slated to be directed by the British director Joe Wright, who is known for his period dramas "Atonement," Anna Karenina," and "Pride and Prejudice." He has also directed "Hanna" and "The Soloist."
The film is slated to be produced by Greg Berlanti and will be written by Jason Fuchs.
Jackman's casting in the new film marks the actor's first villain role. He has previously been seen in "Prisoners" and "The Prestige" as well as "Les Miserables" for which he was nominated for the Academy Award. He is also best known for playing Wolverine in the "X-Men" trilogy and in the "The Wolverine." Jackman will next be seen in "Chappie" with Sharlto Copley and Sigourney Weaver and "X-Men: Days of Future Past" with Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan and Halle Berry.
Warner Bros. hopes the new film will be the start of a new franchise and will release the movie on July 17, 2015. The company has maintained this release day for the past few years as they have released "Inception," "The Dark Knight," and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" to great success.
