The eighth day of the Sundance Film Festival saw many more acquisitions take place.
One of the highest profile deals that is currently in negotiations is "Love is Strange," which Sony Picture Classics is trying acquire. The movie by Ira Sachs stars Alfred Molina, John Lithgow, Marisa Tomei, Cheyenne Jackson, Darren Burrows and Charlie Tahan and tells the story of two longtime gay lovers who finally get married.
If Sony aquires the film it will be the company's third deal of the festival. The company has already bought rights to "Whiplash" and "Land HO!"
Meanwhile, Magnolia is in negotiations to acquire the Michael Fassbender-Maggie Gyllenhaal film "Frank." According to Deadline, Magnolia is trying to purchase the film for a low seven-figure domestic deal. "Frank" is directed by Lenny Abrahamson and tells the story of a band that is led by an eccentric genius lead singer who, everywhere he goes, wears an oversized head, even on stage.
The Weinstein Company has also been busy as it acquired "The One I Love." Deadline reports that it was Weinstein's multi-platform distributor Radius-TWC that made the deal and acquired worldwide rights for around $2 million. The film stars Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss and is about a couple whose marriage is crumbling. As a result, they escape for the weekend in pursuit of better their selves.
The Sundance Film Festival is coming to a close and one of the Dramatic Competition films will go home with the Grand Prize award. Recent winners include "Fruitvale Station," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Like Crazy," and "Winter's Bone."
The Festival closes on Jan. 26 with the annual awards ceremony.
