Daniel Espinosa is rumored to direct "Assassin's Creed."
According to Twitch Film, the Swedish director is the studio's first choice to helm the big screen version of the video game franchise.
The new adaptation, based on the popular video game, was recently rewritten by Scott Frank after playwright Michael Lesslie wrote the first drafts. The movie will be produced by Frank Marshall ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "The Last Airbender") with Michael Fassbender also serving as producer.
Fassbender is also set to star in the film in the lead role but there is no confirmation on what his character's name is. The plot of "Assassin's Creed" is rumored to revolve around a man who learns his ancestors were trained assassins after he is kidnapped by a secret organization with ties to the Knights Templar and sent back in time to retrieve historical artifacts. However, the plot has not been confirmed.
Espinosa is best known for his work on "Safe House" and "Snabba Cash." He also directed the 2010 film "Easy Money." He is currently in post-production on the thriller "Child 44", based on the bestselling book. Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Joel Kinnaman, and Gary Oldman are set to star.
Fassbender is best known for his work in three Steve McQueen films "Hunger" "Shame," and "12 Years a Slave." The actor has also been seen in "Prometheus," "X-Men: First Class," "Fish Tank," "A Dangerous Method" and "Inglorious Basterds. He will next be seen in "Frank" and "Slow West."
Fox is set to release "Assassin's Creed" on Aug. 7, 2015.
