Jonah Hill has revealed that he was paid $60,000 to be in "The Wolf of Wall Street."
The actor told Howard Stern that he opted for the Screen Actors Guild minimum wage so he could work with Martin Scorsese. Additionally, he stated that the film was shot in seven months.
The news comes as a surprise as the movie cost $90 million to produce and given Hill's A-List status and Oscar nomination for "Moneyball," it seemed odd Hill would take a multi-million pay cut.
Hill's not the first actor to take a pay cut in exchange for the opportunity to work with a critcally-acclaimed director like Martin Scorsese. Hill's co-star Leonardo DiCaprio agreed to take a pay cut from his normal $20 million fee to star in Christopher Nolan's 2011 blockbuster "Inception." Warner Bros. thought "Inception" was a risky movie initially because of all of its twists and turns, and a result, DiCaprio chose to take a smaller salary. However, the risk paid off for DiCaprio, who saw his biggest payday. He earned $50 million after the movie grossed over $800 million worldwide.
Other actors who have also taken pay cuts include Brad Pitt for "12 Years a Slave" and George Clooney for "The Descendants."
Hill scored his second Oscar nomination for his performance in "The Wolf of Wall Street." The movie also received nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, Best Director for Martin Scorsese and Best Adapted Screenplay for Terence Winter. The movie was released on Christmas and has already scored a solid $91 million at the box office.
"The Wolf of Wall Street" was released by Paramount and is Rated R for sequences of strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and language throughout, and for some violence.
