"Harry Potter" lead actor Daniel Radcliffe has traded in his magic wand and flying broomstick for a pair of work gloves and construction tools for his latest project.
The 24-year-old actor will be starring in a dramatic film titled "Brooklyn Bridge", according to an article on The Hollywood Reporter. It will be produced by the independent film production company Killer Films, which is known for Radcliffe's 2013 film "Kill Your Darlings". The movie will be financed and distributed by UK-based production company, Goldcrest Films.
The filming of "Brooklyn Bridge" will begin in August of this year and will be directed by Douglas McGrath. The movie will be based on the true events surrounding the construction of New York City's famous bridge.
Radcliffe will play the role of civil engineer Washington Roebling, an instrumental figure in the momentous construction project. BBC reports that Radcliffe's character, Roebling, took over the Brooklyn Bridge project after his father, German immigrant Jon Augustus Roebling passed away.
Roebling endured the daunting task as the bridge took fourteen years to build and claimed the lives of more than twenty of his workers. His obsession and determination to complete the project threatened his own life and his relationship with his family. When the Brooklyn Bridge was finally opened to the public in 1883, it was considered a scientific marvel.
An article in Variety reports that Goldcrest Films' executives are thrilled to have Radcliffe portray the character of Roebling. John Degrove, the company's managing director said, "Having Daniel's involvement is a massive coup for the film, not only is he perfect for the role, but he's constantly proved himself to be one of the very few actors who is genuinely a massive draw for audiences of all ages."
As for the combination of director McGrath and the young wizard, Christine Vachon of Killer Films said, "We love Doug's extraordinary script and working with Daniel is one of the rare treats in the business...this is thrilling for everyone at Killer."
