The Academy of Motion Picture, Arts, and Sciences has decided what producers are nominated for "The Wolf of Wall Street."
Variety is reporting that after a study to determine the producer credit, director Martin Scorsese, star Leonardo DiCaprio, Joey McFarland and Emma Tillinger Koskoff are the four producers eligible for Oscar consideration on "The Wolf of Wall Street."
The Academy's decision was a bit of a surprise because according to the organization's rules there is a limit of three producers that can be nominated. According to Academy rules, a film can have three or fewer producers, but the producer's branch executive committee "has the right, in what it determines to be a rare and extraordinary circumstance, to name any additional qualified producer as a nominee."
More surprising still is that fact that "The Wolf of Wall Street" actually has five producer credits. The fifth producer, Riza Aziz, who is McFarland's partner in Red Granite, was not nominated. However, Red Granite issued a statement immediately after the the Academy's decision. The company said, "We are thrilled that the Academy has recognized the invaluable contributions of Marty, Leo, Joey and Emma on behalf of 'The Wolf of Wall Street.' Riza Aziz and Red Granite remain honored to be part of the production team."
When the Oscar nominees were announced, "Wolf" was listed as a best picture nominee but producer nominees needed to be determined. "The Wolf of Wall Street" is currently in theaters and is enjoying one of the most successful runs for a Scorsese film. The movie is nominated for five Academy Awards and is expected to take home the Best Actor award for DiCaprio.
The Oscars will be presented March 2 at the Dolby Theatre with Ellen DeGeneres hosting. The awards show will be televised live on the ABC Television Network.
