A seemingly proud Madonna posted a picture of her 13-year-old son, Rocco, boxing, on photo sharing app, Instagram. The internet world, however, was in an uproar for the caption that accompanied said post. The superstar wrote, "No one messes with Dirty Soap! Mama said knock you out!"

Followed by the hashtag "#disn***a."

This was especially inappropriate considering the date she posted the photo. Gossip Girl said about the post, "It doesn't matter how old you are, that's an offensive and tacky thing to do especially with Martin Luther King, Jr. day upon us, don't you think?"

The post has since been deleted, but Mstarz managed to record a screencap. Shortly after a slew of comments criticized her for her choice of words, a defiant Madonna re-posted the photo with a defensive caption, reading, "Ok let me start this again. #get off my dick haters!"

After sleeping on the issue, she made a U-turn and asked for forgiveness the following morning, claiming that it was meant as a "term of endearment" for her son.

She apologized by sending a statement to CNN where she said through her rep, "I am sorry if I offended anyone with my use of the N word on Instagram. It was not meant as a racial slur.. I am not a racist. There's no way to defend the use of the word. It was all about intention... It was used as a term of endearment toward my son who is white. I appreciate that it's a provocative word and I apologize if it gave people the wrong impression. Forgive me."

She also added another note, telling her fans that, "MY job is to inspire and bring people together . My message has always been about tolerance and non judgement. The last thing I want to do is bring chaos or cause separation in anyway. #revolutionoflove."

According to the Independent, the racial slur incident is not the first time that Madonna was criticized on Instagram. Earlier in the month, she also posted a photo of her son and his friends holding up bottles of alcohol. Responding to the criticisms, she told her Instagram followers that nobody was drinking, and that they were just having fun. "Calm down and get a sense of humor! Don't start the year off with judgement!"
