"American Hustle" was honored as the Best Ensemble of 2013 by the Screen Actors Guild of America.
The David O. Russell film defeated front-runner "12 Years a Slave" for Best Ensemble and is now one step closer to winning the Academy Award for Best Picture. The SAG awards are important because 20 percent of SAG voters are also Oscar voters. The film's win could be a turning point in the Oscar race as many SAG winners have went on to win the Oscar, including "Argo," "The King's Speech" and "Crash." However, it is important to note that sometimes SAG goes for star-studded casts as opposed to eventual Oscar winners. Recent winners that did not win the Oscar include "The Help," "Inglorious Basterds" and "Little Miss Sunshine."
Among the other major winners at the awards ceremony was Cate Blanchett for her role in "Blue Jasmine." The actress is undoubtedly the front-runner to win the Oscar. Meanwhile, Jared Leto continued his winning streak for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Dallas Buyers Club."
Lupita Nyong'o won her second straight Best Supporting Actress award for her role in "12 Years a Slave." Nyong'o can now be considered the front-runner in this category leaving Jennifer Lawrence ("American Hustle"), Nyong'o's biggest opponent, one step behind.
Matthew McConaughey also won yet another Best Actor Award for his role in "Dallas Buyers Club." However, it is important to note that the race is far from over. Leonardo DiCaprio is a huge contender for his role in "The Wolf of Wall Street." Since the SAG awards were unable to screen DiCaprio's film, anything could happen at the Academy Awards in March.
The final film winner was "Lone Survivor," which took home the honor for Best Stunt Ensemble. The movie defeated "Rush," "All is Lost," "Fast and Furious 6" and "The Wolverine."
