Policemen in Chihuahua arrested Ángel Salvador Taboada Villanueva, aka "El Cone", alleged killer of Juan Francisco Sicilia, son of Mexican activist and poet Javier Sicilia, on January 15 according to local sources.
The Attorney General of the Republic (SGR) of Mexico, which offered a $3 million pesos reward for information leading to the capture of Villanueva, told the Mexican media that the alleged murderer is a member of the South Pacific Cartel and is related to at least six other murders.
Raúl Ávila, Director of the Chihuahua State Police, told the press that Villanueva had participated in the killing of Juan Francisco Sicilia along with Julio de Jesús Radilla, alleged boss of the South Pacific Cartel, and then escaped to the state of Sinaloa, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"This person was captured on Tuesday night in the city of Chihuahua by members of the State Police, right now we're confirming his arrest," Carlos González, spokesman for the Chihuahua General Attorney told EFE.
On March 28, 2011 Juan Francisco Sicilia Ortega, son of known Mexican poet Javier Sicilia, was found dead in Cuernavaca, Morelos, inside a car along with six other people.
Javier Sicilia then became one of Mexico's most renowned activists after heading the Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity, a group that served as a mediator between civil population groups and the government who they demand provide justice for the thousands of people who have suffered from criminal violence.
According to an article recently published by CNN, Villanueva's capture was achieved thanks to an anonymous tip to the SGR, which then relayed the information that led to the killer's capture.
