As fans anticipate for the upcoming "Veronica Mars" movie, CW released news that it will be doing a web spin-off of the cult television series. Seattle PI said in its report that the network has given the greenlight to produce the TV series spin-off for CW Seed, its digital platform.
At the winter television previews of the Television Critics Association Wednesday, CW President Mark Pedowitz said, "Rob [Thomas] and I talked last night. He's very excited to do something for CW Seed." Thomas is the creator of "Veronica Mars", and Buzzfeed said he will be spearheading the spin-off.
Although further details of the new CW Digital series were not disclosed, Buzzfeed quoted Pedowitz, saying Thomas approached the network about the spin-off idea and discussed actors who could potentially be involved in the new series. The report also said that CW is gearing for up to eight, 10-minute episodes for the digital series, but will not be hitting screens before the feature film debuts.
The "Veronica Mars" movie will be released on March 14, Variety said. Majority of the movie's production funds was famously backed through online crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. The show's lead star Kristen Bell, together with Thomas, lead the online fundraising, which took in $5.7 million from fans.
In the last few days into the online fundraising for the "Veronica Mars" movie, Thomas talked to Wired about the difficulty of getting the U.S. television series off for another go. Since its cancellation six years ago, Thomas told the entertainment news site that the success of the crowdfunding he and Bell had initiated on Kickstarter had given hope to cult film fans who wishes to revive fandom properties like "Veronica Mars."
"I think it will be an important pioneer for a certain type of film. I'm not convinced that this will revolutionize how most movies get made, but I think there's an opportunity now for projects that are similar to ours - that have some bit of public support behind it before they launch on Kickstarter... For something like Veronica Mars, where there's a bit of a cult following and people are really emotionally invested in it, I do think this is a new avenue. There is no other way that this movie was going to get made," Thomas said.
