The new dystopian action-adventure film based on the series of books by Veronica Roth is coming to the big screen in March.
According to Cinema Blend, in "Divergent", the society is broken up into factions based on how people live their lives. Beatrice "Tris" Prior is a sixteen-year-old with a special mind that makes her a threat to the new, divided society. Twenty-two year old Shailene Woodley, who stars as Tris in the film, spills the beans about what the story is really like.
She told Hero Complex, "It's not just about young people figuring their way through life, it's about young people being in really adult situations, and they're treated like adults, which is how adolescents are these days. Everybody's incredibly smart, and there's not a lot of movies that do that age range justice."
The author of the book series, Veronica Roth, doesn't consider Tris a role model, but insists on her guiding her own way in the society. The author said, "Tris is a character with a lot of agency and a lot of power. One of my rules for myself was Tris has to be somehow responsible for what happens to her, for better or for worse; no acts of God."
Producer Douglas Wick notes that the filmmakers have faith that the franchise will appeal to a massive audience, as the sequel "Insurgent", which is based on the second book in the series, is already in the works for a March 2015 release.
The producer said, "It's just a really true, well-observed hero's journey, and it happens to be a young woman, but above all, it's a story about empowerment and facing your physical fears, your inner fears and taking your own measure. Part of what sets it apart is someone really had something original and true to say. I think the audiences really smell the difference."
"Divergent" will open in theaters March 21st.
