Film Critic Armond White has been kicked out of the New York Film Critics.
After debating for hours, the NYFCC decided to take disciplinary actions. Stephen Whitty, critic for The Star-Ledger and the group's new chairman, said in the statement, "The New York Film Critics Circle deeply regrets any embarrassment caused its guests or honorees by any member's recent actions. Sadly, disciplinary measures had to be taken, to prevent any reoccurrence."
After the decision, White spoke out against the critics denying all the claims. He said, "The allegations are flat out untrue. There was no heckling from my table. I don't cozy up to the hype machine. I think other film critics are embarrassed by the way they cozy up. So they attack me."
The expulsion occurred after White allegedly insulted director Steve McQueen at the New York Film Critics' awards ceremony. White reprtedly yelled, "You're an embarrassing doorman and garbage man. [Expletive] you. Kiss my [Expletive]."
White was very verbal about his hate for the McQueen film "12 Years a Slave:" He wrote in his review, "That's right, '12 Years a Slave' belongs to the torture porn genre with 'Hostel,' 'The Human Centipede' and the 'Saw' franchise but it is being sold (and mistaken) as part of the recent spate of movies that pretend 'a conversation about race.'"
In the past, White has been one of the most controversial critics around. He is best known for being a contrarian and this year he criticized "Gravity," "Blue Jasmine" and "Captain Phillips," all of which were critically acclaimed.
The NYFCC is known as one of the most prestigious film critic associations. The society awarded the Best Film of th year to "American Hustle" and awarded the Best Director prize to Steve McQueen.
